The Security Section of
the Justice Bureau is comprised of Civilians, Correction
Officers, Deputies, Correctional Sergeants and Deputy
Lieutenants with experience ranging from the newly hired
employee to the 25 year veteran, and everything in between.
We have civilian staff and officers from all walks of life.
The section is truly a reflection of the community we
serve.
The Security Section is
responsible for the safety and wellbeing of the inmates we
keep, the citizenry we serve, and the employees we work
with. It is a never ending and seldom rewarding profession.
At the line level we have
approximately 18 to 21 officers on four shifts, along with
one to three clerks, three Correctional Sergeants serving as
the first line supervisor, and one Deputy Sheriff with the
rank of Lieutenant serving as Watch Commander. These 12 hour
shifts run 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Shifts rotate
every 16 weeks from Day Watch (0600-1800) to Evening Watch
(1800-0600).
The Detention Facility is operated under the concept that
Inmates are expected to be Compliant until they exhibit
Non-Compliant behavior, and are treated accordingly.
Officers are required to teach inmates, through an
Orientation Process, what is expected of them during their
stay at the Detention Facility. To that end, an inmate that
obeys the rules of the facility receives specific privileges
that are pre-determined by policy and procedure. Conversely,
inmates that fail to adhere to rules of the facility are
disciplined in accordance with pre-determined guidelines
delineated through policy and procedure. It is the intent
of the facility to correct undesirable behavior through a
firm progressive disciplinary process.
The Security Section is
responsible for inmates from the time they enter the
facility until the time they leave, and every moment
between. Officers and Civilian Staff Members work daily to
ensure inmates are forwarded every protection given them by
the United States Constitution.
Security Section Staff
members ensure inmates are only incarcerated under the
authority of legal committal documents. They ensure
inmates are only held under proper authority of those legal
documents, and they are immediately released when the legal
right to hold them has ceased. The Security Section
accomplishes this through constant, consistent coordination,
communication and cooperation with city, county, state,
national and international agencies and organizations
throughout the world.
Security Section Staff
members not only do all within their power to ensure inmates
are held when they are supposed to be and released when they
are supposed to be but they also assist other agencies in
apprehending subjects on their charges should they pass
through our doors while actively wanted by that agency.
