The Clayton County Jail
was completed in 2000, with a capacity of 1920 inmates. The
jail has an on-site medical facility with a capacity of 27
inmates. The infirmary has on-site dental, X ray, and
dialysis facilities. The kitchen is supervised by contract
personnel and staffed with inmate labor.
The Clayton County Jail
and administration building is composed of two different
building methods. The jail inmate-housing portion
(approximately 506,500 square feet) was constructed of
pre-cast pre-formed concrete. The total building area for
the Jail and Administration function covers more than 10
acres. Total cost of the facility was over $93,000,000.
This was paid in full prior to occupation by a Special Local
Option Sales Tax.
There are eight 96 cell,
192-bed housing units and eight 48-bed dormitories to
accommodate up to 1920 inmates in the jail.
The facility is designed
to expand in a westerly direction by adding up to four more
housing units.
Previous Clayton County Jails
In 1962, need for space
led county officials to build a new addition around the 1898
courthouse. This included an extra 88 beds for jail space.
The Robert A. Deyton
Detention center was opened in the fall of 1986. The jail
was designed to hold 396 inmates but with added beds in the
cells, it was later able to hold 576 inmates. The facility
was located in Lovejoy, Ga. |
