The
Fugitives and Intelligence Unit is made up of ten
Investigators. The primary objective of the Fugitives
Squad is to locate and arrest violent offender fugitives,
including those sought for murder, aggravated assault, rape
and robbery.
A fugitive is a wanted person fleeing law enforcement
officers to avoid arrest.
Of the ten
Investigators, four are assigned
collateral duties of gathering gang
intelligence and following up on drug investigations that
arise from leads developed by Sheriff’s Office personnel.
There are four Investigators that are also assigned duties
of handling miscellaneous investigations at the direction of
the Sheriff. The Sheriff's Office also has one Investigator
assigned to the US Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive
Task Force, and one Investigator assigned to the High
Intensity Drug Trafficking Areas Task Force (HIDTA) in
Atlanta.
Investigators also handle all extradition matters for the
Sheriff's Office. These include extradition hearings,
obtaining fugitive warrants and confirmation of warrants.
Extradition is the legal surrender of a fugitive from one
jurisdiction to another state, country, or government for
the purposes of a trial on the alleged crimes committed.
This unit handles not only fugitives located in Clayton
County, but also fugitives from Clayton County located in
other states.
