The Jr. Deputy Program is designed to promote positive law
enforcement role models in the elementary schools. Each
month Deputies venture out to the elementary schools in
Clayton County and address fourth graders on topics that
include an introduction to the program, and the daily
operations of the Sheriff’s Office. We explain in simple
terms the judicial system and how it is associated with our
law enforcement duties. The topics covered: Bullying in
schools, the consequences, and how to resolve conflicts
effectively without violence. Fire Safety and what to do
if a fire occurs at home, and means for being safe. Gun
Safety, Cigarettes/Drugs, Shoplifting, Water and
Recreational are other topics we discuss. Throughout the
months we cover several character words that enlighten the
youth on positive behavior. Our goal is influence the youth
to make prudent choices in their endeavors. At the end of
the school year a graduation ceremony is conducted and each
child is rewarded with a certificate of completion of the
program. One fourth grade student is nominated from each
elementary school to represent that school as the Jr. Deputy
of the Year.
